How does the design of London impact the safety of women and girls?

The concept of “gender mainstreaming” was developed in response to the different ways in which men, women and gender diverse people experience the world around them and the different ways in which policy can impact them.[1]

A 2018 report by the House of Commons Women and Equalities Committee on the sexual harassment of women and girls in public places stated that sexual harassment in public spaces is overwhelmingly experienced by women and girls.[2]

The London Assembly Planning and Regeneration Committee will meet tomorrow to investigate the impact of the planning system on women and girls in London.

The Committee will also look at what work the Mayor and the Greater London Authority (GLA) are doing to address gender bias in the planning system.

Guests at the meeting include:

  • Marina Milosev, Team Leader at The London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC)
  • Susannah Walker, Co-founder and Trustee, Make Space for Girls (MSFG)
  • Olivia Theocarides Feldman, Researcher, LSE Cities
  • Sarah E. Considine, Principal Project Officer, Good Growth by Design, GLA
  • Alison Bradshaw, Spatial Planning Area Team Manager (West), Transport for London (TfL)
  • Tayo Isa-Daniel, Urban researcher, architect, and senior design researcher, AtkinsRéalis

The meeting will take place on Thursday 29 February from 10am, in the Chamber, at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
