How are the Mayor and Met delivering for Londoners on policing?

Metropolitan Police officers
Created on
01 November 2023

Baroness Casey’s review into culture and standards in the Metropolitan Police accused it of being institutionally racist, misogynist and homophobic [1], following a number of high-profile incidents that have undermined trust and confidence in the Service.

The ‘New Met for London Plan’ was published in July 2023, with the Commissioner outlining three priorities for reform – community crime fighting, culture change and fixing our foundations [2].

The Mayor is responsible for holding the Commissioner of the Met to account for policing in London and is the head of the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC).

The Mayor published his current Police and Crime Plan 2022-25 in March 2022, setting out his “vision for a city in which Londoners are safer – and feel safer” [3].

It includes four themes – reducing and preventing violence, increasing trust and confidence, better supporting victims and protecting people from being exploited or harmed.

What are the biggest challenges with regards to policing and crime in London, and how are the Mayor and the Met delivering for Londoners? The full London Assembly will meet tomorrow to discuss this.

The guests are:

  • Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
  • Sir Mark Rowley QPM, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Service

Following the Q&A session a number of motions will be debated.

The meeting will take place on Thursday 2 November from 10am, in the Chamber, at City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
