Future trends for London’s transport network

A red London bus
Created on
12 March 2024

In recent years there have been many innovations in personal mobility in London, including new forms of micromobility, such as e-scooters and e-bikes, and app-based payment options.

Autonomous or driverless vehicles are considered by many as the future of personal and public transport.

In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) has also become more prominent across the world, with the government highlighting AI’s potential in September 2018, stating:

“It needs to be ensured that government recognises the potential for this technology and ensures that it has the internal expertise and knowledge to make decisions now to enable the UK to be at the forefront of utilising its benefits.”[1]

What will the future of London’s public transport network look like? How will new technologies make journeys better for Londoners, and reduce carbon emissions? What other emerging technologies could benefit Londoners accessing transport?

The London Assembly Transport Committee will meet tomorrow to investigate and discuss emerging transport issues that may impact London’s transport network in the future, and which might be themes for inclusion in the next Mayor’s Transport Strategy.

Guests include:

  • Thomas Ableman, Director of Strategy and Innovation, Transport for London (TfL)
  • Hirra Khan Adeogun, Co-Director, Possible
  • Robert Garbutt, CEO, Drone Major Group
  • Philippe Crist, Senior Advisor Innovation and Foresight, International Transport Forum (ITF)
  • Kyounga Park, Chief Director of Department of Metropolitan and Urban Transport, Korea Transport Institute

The meeting will take place on Wednesday 13 March 2024 from 10am, in the Chamber, City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, E16 1ZE.

Media and members of the public are invited to attend.

The meeting can also be viewed LIVE or later via webcast or YouTube.
