Whilst there is no statutory legislation for the police to be involved in the planning process, for large scale developments the police can provide advice regarding safety in design.
This guidance could lead to car parking and private areas being well lit, safety of public areas, secure and climb resistant fencing, and avoiding unnecessary alleyways.[1]
Advising in the design of the built environment from pre-planning through to the full planning process is a specialist role administered by specialist police officers known as Designing Out Crime Officers (DOCOs). DOCOs liaise with architects, developers, and local authorities to implement crime prevention measures in the built environment.
