Bring back City Hall floor map

The London Assembly believes that the new City Hall building is currently lacking symbols of civic pride and needs improvements to make it more welcoming to visitors.

The previous City Hall building housed a floor map with an aerial view of London, which was a popular attraction particularly enjoyed by visitors from schools and by tourists.

Because of this, the Assembly is today calling on the Mayor to reinstall an aerial floor map of London at the new City Hall.

Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM, who proposed the motion, said:

“The new City Hall is currently lacking in symbols of civic pride.

“The Old City Hall next to Tower Bridge housed a floor map with an aerial view of London. The map was a popular attraction for visitors to City Hall including for school groups and tourists.

“It would be great to see the Mayor agree to improve the attractiveness of City Hall for visitors and to build some civic pride into the latest home for London’s Government by agreeing to reinstall an aerial map of London at City Hall.”

Andrew Boff AM, who seconded the motion, said:

“I’m delighted my Assembly colleagues unanimously supported this call to install an aerial floor map of London at City Hall. The old City Hall next to Tower Bridge housed a floor map which was enjoyed hugely by visitors. Having an aerial floor map would make the current City Hall more welcoming for visitors.”

The full text of the motion is:

This Assembly notes the old City Hall next to Tower Bridge housed a floor map with an aerial view of London.

The Assembly further notes that the map was a popular attraction at City Hall and was particularly enjoyed by visitors from schools and by tourists, showing the scale of the capital city and key landmarks within.

This Assembly believes that the new City Hall is currently lacking symbols of civic pride and needs improvements to make it more welcoming to visitors and to better represent the work of the Greater London Authority and the geography of London.

This Assembly calls on the Mayor of London to reinstall an aerial floor map of London at the new City Hall.
