Assembly calls for Government to end divisive rhetoric

London Data Week events took place across London
Created on
02 November 2023

The London Assembly is concerned that the comments by the Home Secretary could stoke division and blame minority communities for social problems.

Because of this, it has today called on the Government to end the divisive rhetoric that can fuel racism and hatred towards those from other backgrounds.

It is also calling on the Mayor to outline the actions he is taking to ensure that London’s multicultural communities and respected and protected, and what he is doing to support refugees and asylum seekers in London.

Dr Onkar Sahota AM, who proposed the motion, said:

“The Home Secretary’s comments were divisive and fuel the sentiments that drive hate. We condemn her comments in the strongest terms and I am pleased that the London Assembly has thrown their weight behind this criticism of the Home Secretary.

“To each and every Londoner – regardless of faith, ethnicity, sexuality, gender or background, and regardless of how long you’ve lived in our city – you are welcome here.”

The full text of the motion is:

Londoners take pride in the diversity of their city.

The Assembly notes, with condemnation, comments from the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, last month that multiculturalism 'has failed’ and that it undermines the stability and security of a society.

The Assembly disavows these statements in the strongest terms. Diversity in cultures, religions and perspectives adds to London’s identity. Multiculturalism gives London strength and does not pose risks to our city.

Giving asylum to those who are fleeing persecution is one of the UK’s strengths and should not be undermined. This Assembly is concerned that the Home Secretary’s comments could stoke division and blame minority communities for social problems.

The Assembly calls on the Government to:

  • End the divisive rhetoric which can fuel racism and hatred towards those from other backgrounds.

The Assembly calls on the Mayor to:

  • Outline to the Assembly the actions he is taking to ensure that London’s multicultural communities are respected and protected.
  • Outline to the Assembly the actions he is taking to ensure that migrants are given the same opportunities to thrive as other Londoners.
  • Outline to the Assembly the actions he is taking to support refugees and asylum seekers in London.
