Action needed to reduce the danger on London’s roads

Created on
02 November 2023

Some 3,961 people were killed or seriously injured on London’s roads in 2022.

The interim Vision Zero target for 2022, set by the Mayor in 2018, was that there should be a 65 per cent reduction in deaths and serious injuries on London’s roads. So far, the reduction has been 38 per cent.

The London Assembly stands with all victims of road traffic collisions and their families and supports all efforts to reduce the danger on London’s roads.

It has today agreed a motion calling on the Mayor, the whole Greater London Authority (GLA) group, councils in London, the police and the Government to work together to reduce road danger in London.

It also calls on the Mayor to give an update to Londoners on how Vision Zero will now be reached, and any further interim targets.

Caroline Russell AM, who proposed the motion, said:

“102 Londoners were killed and 3,859 people were seriously injured on London’s roads in 2022.

“We cannot keep reading these stories each week and believe our work is done. Every death or serious injury is preventable and people should be able to trust that friends and family members will get home safely after travelling through our city.

“The Mayor of London can and must play his part in reducing danger on London’s roads.”

Elly Baker AM, who seconded the motion, said:

“My sympathies go to everyone who has lost someone on London’s roads.

“We can and will reduce the number of road deaths in our city. Good progress has been made but there is much more to do – and the London Assembly will ensure that all parts of London work together to achieve Vision Zero.”
