Sian Berry welcomes apology from Mayor of London over solar scheme scandal
London Assembly Member Siân Berry has won an apology from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to Londoners impacted by an ongoing scandal with his solar panel scheme for residents.
The intention of the Solar Together scheme, launched in 2018, was to offer Londoners savings on home installations of solar PV panels and batteries.
However, one of the contractors appointed by the third party chosen to run the scheme by the Mayor, iChoosr, has recently filed for liquidation, leaving customers out of pocket. [1]
Assembly Member Sian Berry has been helping residents affected by poor service from the contractor, Green Energy Together UK for nearly two years.[2]
At Mayor’s Question Time this week, she asked the Mayor to offer an apology to all those affected, and he said in response:
“To those impacted, I am not only sorry, I am deeply committed to ensuring that they are transferred to other installers, deposits protected and refunds provided.”
Sian Berry said:
“Londoners suffering for several years from failures in the service provided by the Mayor’s Solar Together scheme, needed to hear this long-overdue apology for the distress and anxiety caused.
“I’ve been receiving messages from upset Londoners about this contractor for nearly two years.
“I’ve been struck by how this has damaged Londoners trust in the Mayor of London and City Hall’s reputation for delivering green energy schemes during an energy crisis.
“In a climate emergency, it has also, inexcusably, impacted confidence in renewable energy.”
She added: “Residents have potentially lost thousands of pounds in deposits and received shocking customer service. They deserve better.
“Londoners waited too long for this apology from the Mayor, for his role in overseeing this solar scandal. He now needs to follow up the promises and ensure refunds are provided and no-one loses money as a result of this scandal.”
