As today’s Spring Budget 2024 debate over a cost of living crisis continues, Zack Polanski AM released new data demonstrating the clear popularity of progressive policies like Universal Basic Income and a Wealth Tax.

In his recent YouGov survey, a majority (53 per cent) of Londoners polled supported a Universal Basic Income, a policy in which the government makes sure everyone has an income, without a means test or requirement to work. [1]

Similarly, the same YouGov poll found that more than two thirds – 68 per cent – of Londoners support a Wealth Tax, where there is a 1 per cent tax on personal wealth (possessions and/or money) above £10 million.

Green Party London Assembly Member Zack Polanski AM said:

"We hear about this cost of living crisis in the Budget debate, but the super rich are doing better than they ever have before.

"We are facing an inequality crisis. A transfer of wealth from multi millionaires to billionaires is not just popular - it's also necessary.

"A Universal Basic Income is an idea whose time has come. Change is possible - it requires the imagination and vision to do things differently. And the popularity of these ideas will continue to grow."
