Caroline Russell AM statement on AI facial recognition ban

Joining a coalition of campaigners and cross-party MPs, Caroline Russell, Green Party Assembly Member, issued the following statement:

"Politicians are finally waking up to the dangerous use of live facial recognition surveillance, and parliamentarians from all parties are now calling for it to be banned.

“We know that younger, Asian and Black Londoners are more likely not to attend events if they know they will be monitored with this invasive technology. That's why I've opposed it in the London Assembly and councils like Newham have rejected it.

“Instead of the Met ramping up its use and the Mayor of London refusing to rule it out, they should listen to this growing chorus of opposition and end the surveillance and over-policing of Londoners just going about their day."
