EIR - London bus fleet and zero emission [Mar 2024]

Key information

Request reference number: MGLA130224-6501

Date of response:

Summary of request

Your request

I am requesting information about the bus fleet across the mayoral authority. We define the bus fleet as buses owned by the combined/mayoral authority or relevant transport body and those owned by private operators. This information may be held by a relevant transport body.

In particular, please supply me with information relating to the following questions:

  1. What is the percentage of the bus fleet across the mayoral authority that is zero emission? Please could the total percentage be given as well as the percentage of the bus fleet that are hydrogen buses and battery electric buses.
  2. What is the total number of zero emission buses within the mayoral authority? Please could the number be given for hydrogen buses and battery electric buses.
  3. What is the total number of buses in the bus fleet?

We define zero emission buses as buses that are run on hydrogen or battery electric. We do not include hybrid buses or biodiesel buses as zero emission.

Our response

Some of this information is publicly available. Where this is the case I have provided links to the information. The GLA does not own or operate any buses. Transport for London (TfL) is the Mayor's transport authority and is responsible for implementing the Mayor's Transport Strategy, and for the day-to-day operational running of transport services. You may wish to send a further request to TfL at [email protected].

As of January 2024, there were 1,300 zero-emission buses in the TfL fleet of around 9,000 buses. TfL publishes fleet vehicle operational data online: Bus fleet data & audits - Transport for London (tfl.gov.uk)
