Response to Government intervention on London Plan

In response to a new intervention from the Government on housing in London, London Assembly Labour Planning and Regeneration Spokesperson, Sakina Sheikh AM said:

“This is another inappropriate intervention by the Levelling Up Secretary, playing political football with the London Plan.

“City Hall has led the way when it comes to housing, sparking a golden era of council housebuilding and building affordable homes across London.

“In contrast, the Government have failed repeatedly to meet their own housebuilding targets.

“Whilst the planning system has its flaws, especially delays, this has been compounded by over a decade of cuts to local authority planning departments and uncertainty caused by Government interference.

“The Government’s last review of the London Plan, published only a few months ago found no fundamental issues. This latest review seems to be another desperate attempt from the Government to do down our capital.”
