Barking and Dagenham College opened their brand new, multi-million pound Jubilee Building at their Rush Green campus in September 2013. With its ultra-modern frontage and state of the art industry facilities – including a STEM Centre, commercial and training restaurant and Pitch on Demand (POD) entrepreneurial zone – both students and members of the community are reaping the benefits of this major redevelopment.

How does this show what we're looking for?

  • a community hub, offering excellent facilities to the public including a library resource centre, fitness centre, beauty and hair salons and fine dining restaurant
  • industry standard learning facilities including the Gazelle STEM Centre, plumbing academy and green technology workshops, bakery and training kitchens
  • innovative and inspiring environments for learners to reach their full potential, such as the free POD entrepreneurial zone to help students to get their ideas off the ground

This project demonstrates best practice because:

  • the ultra-modern design uses large expanses of glass, letting natural light stream in and creates an open and bright learning environment
  • landscaping at the front of the campus includes greenery and trees, adding to the aesthetics of the redevelopment and creating an inviting entrance to the community hub
  • the college shares its first-class teaching and learning facilities with the community via an effective commercial and training model which creates real life working environments for students. For example, trainee chefs studying at Level 3 prepare the fine dining at the college’s public Chef's Hat restaurant, while the front of house is managed by food and beverage apprentices
  • the college maximises its assets by offering its spaces for private and business hire, including a conference suite, board rooms, lecture theatre, sports hall and dance studios
