The London Information Sharing to Tackle Violence (ISTV) programme, co-ordinated by the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC), seeks to enable data sharing between Emergency Departments (EDs) and other partners to help tackle violent crime across London.

Each ED in London collects a small amount of data from every victim of violent crime who presents for treatment. The data set is based on the NHS and College of Emergency Medicine approved ISTV Minimum Dataset.

ISTV is a small anonymised dataset and covers the following areas:

  • Time and date of the incident
  • Time and date of arrival in the ED
  • Specific location of the incident (brief description of the geographic location where the incident took place)
  • Primary means of assault (for instance whether a weapon or body part was used in the assault)

Each ED in London shares the ISTV data set with the GLA SafeStats Team on a monthly basis. The data is loaded onto the GLA’s SafeStats portal – a pan-London database - where it is added to other data such as police crime data, information from Transport for London and from the London Ambulance Service. Once on SafeStats the data can be accessed by local Community Safety Partnerships and the Metropolitan Police Service to inform their violence prevention work.

Find further information on SafeStats.

Data is now being shared by all 29 EDs in London meaning that those who work to prevent violence in London have access to a rich data source relating to where and when interpersonal violence is taking place.
