London has a growing construction skills shortage, and construction sector employers require a site-ready workforce to help build the homes Londoners need.

To make sure Londoners benefit from the wide range of opportunities available in the sector, the Mayor set up his Mayor's Construction Academy (MCA), connecting Londoners to training in the skills they need to access vacancies in the capital’s developments, in trades, professions and management.

The MCA is doing this through:

  1. Quality Mark, which identifies and recognises high-quality construction skills training provision in London. This is quality in terms of the curriculum, routes into employment and strong links with employers.
  2. Hubs to help Londoners, employers, training providers and the organisations supporting them both to connect more often, more quickly, and with better outcomes.
  3. Investment for equipment and facilities to support the delivery of high-quality construction training in London. We will be investing in building information modelling, design for manufacture and assembly and virtual learning to help learners get practical skills in the trades earlier and faster.

Get involved

The MCA aims to:

  • improve the supply of skilled construction workers required by the sector, creating more opportunities for Londoners to benefit from the available job opportunities (including more women and BAME Londoners);

  • scale up and extend high-quality provision and initiatives that are already working well across the capital to train Londoners in the skills needed to enter and progress in careers in the construction sector;

  • intensify local collaboration, particularly between small and medium sized businesses and construction skills training providers; and

  • support the development of training provision for the construction of precision-manufactured housing in London.

To find out about the impact the MCA programme is having, see our good news stories page.
