Environment measurement and data

We track levels of pollutants in London and publish lots of data on London’s environment for free.

You’ll find most of our environment data on London Datastore. The main areas of measurement and data include:

The London Energy and Greenhouse Gas Inventory (LEGGI) – This is a database of how much energy is used by London’s homes, workplaces and transport. It also measures how London is contributing to climate change with data on greenhouse gas emissions. London’s main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2). You can use LEGGI to find out how much CO2 is emitted in each London borough. You can also find out which fuels and activities are contributing towards CO2 in London.

The London Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (LAEI) – This is a database of the amount of air pollution in London. The main air pollutants that most affect people’s health are nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5). You can use the LAEI to find out how much NO2, PM10 and PM 2.5 has been emitted in parts of London in the past, as well as how much we think will be emitted in the future.

Assessing London’s indirect carbon emissions – We have come up with a new way to measure London’s greenhouse gas emissions. The ‘PAS 2070 methodology’ covers greenhouse gas emissions both from what happens in London and what we’re responsible for outside of London. This is from what we consume, like food grown and manufactured outside of London and then transported into London. You can also read a summary.

Cleaner Air for London – This website has data and interactive maps on air quality in different parts of London.

London Air - London’s air quality is measured at around 100 different places. This website has real-time and historical data on London’s air quality.

iGiGL (Greenspace Information for Greater London) – This website has data on London's wildlife, parks, nature reserves, gardens and other open space.
