Take your first step

Visit a school

If you're thinking about a career in teaching, the first thing you should do is visit a school. It's a great way to help you decide if teaching is right for you and where you'd like to work.

If you want to work in a certain area, talk to teachers who've been through a local teacher training programme. This will help you find out more about the culture and practicalities of what's on offer there.

Perhaps you already have a teacher training provider in mind? In that case, ask them how much school experience you'll need before you apply. If you're working, do remember that not all providers require school experience, as it can be difficult to arrange for working people.

You can arrange your own London school experience directly with a school provider and some schools will be part of the national School Experience Programme.

Come to a teacher training event

Another way to find out more about the profession is to come to a teacher event in London. These are run by schools and other teacher training providers around the capital.

Have a look below to find information about events near you. Events are also listed on the Department for Education's Get Into Teaching website.

The Department for Education also provides online events which discuss a range of topics related to teacher training, including personal statement advice and help with deciding the best training route. You can sign up for these here.

Schools and other providers that would like to promote events, should get in touch with us via email.

Find a teacher training course

To find teacher training courses you can use the postgraduate teacher training website. The site allows applicants to search by location and/ or training provider.

Find a teaching job

You can search for teaching roles in London on the Department for Education's Teacher Vacancies site. You can search by location and subject.
