King’s College London Mathematics School

Kings College London Mathmatics School (KCLMS) strengthened Further Mathematics teaching in London through developing teachers' subject and teaching expertise.

Accelerating Knowledge and Pedagogy in Further Maths Teaching

The project aimed to strengthen Further Mathematics teaching in London by improving mathematics teachers' subject knowledge and associated teaching expertise in order to increase take up, retention and attitudes of students. This was done through whole day CPD sessions and in-school coaching, by established mentor teachers. A network of Further Mathematics teachers and schools centred around the KCLMS was also established.

Findings from tests and self-evaluation showed that all participants found that their knowledge, understanding and expertise had improved as a result of the course. Nearly 50% of teachers had a collective score gain of 5.3 marks on the Further Mathematics and Coordinate Geometry tests, equating to a 'very large' effect size of 1.22.
