Celebrating Black History Month
The Mayor of London is marking the 30th anniversary of Black History Month by celebrating the role of Black storytellers in London - from journalists to historians and teachers, film-makers to playwrights and authors.
Storytellers bring the experiences of our African and Caribbean Londoners to life so that people from all backgrounds can celebrate the vital part these communities have played in shaping the capital.

Here's just a few of the events you can get involved in at City Hall, Trafalgar Square and across London.
Exhibition: Bessie's Wings | October 3- 27 | City Hall
Art and photography by junior and secondary pupils explores themes of travel, aviation, flight and migration, as well as identity and celebration. It's inspired by the life of Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Coleman, the first African American female pilot and the first Native American to hold a pilot’s licence.
Exhibition: The Voice Newspaper celebrates 35 years | October 16 - 29 | City Hall
The Voice Newspaper celebrates 35 years with an exhibition at City Hall. Touching on politics, sports, entertainment and the arts, this exhibition marks key moments in London’s history as they have unfolded in the pages of the newspaper.

Join author Colin Grant for readings and discussions exploring the perspectives of Black British writers on the stories they choose to tell.
Africa on the Square | October 14 | Trafalgar Square
This major event celebrates the arts and culture of African communities across the continent. Enjoy fantastic entertainment, food, fashion, market stalls and more.

Film Screening: Soul On Ice: Past, Present, & Future | October 21 & 22 | Picture House Central
Soul on Ice tells the story of the Coloured Hockey League and the history of Black players in ice hockey in the United States and Canada.
