Tools for action

Whether you’re at the start of this journey or further down the road, we all know we need to head in the same direction to reduce our negative effects on the environment but it’s not always easy to know how and where to look to get going.

Below is a regularly updated list of guidance, advice, tools and networks to help you on your way.

Arts Green Book

A new and innovative guidebook, supported by Arts Council England and Greater London Authority in collaboration with global sustainability experts Buro Happold, dedicated to culture organisations across the country to help them take steps to be more sustainable.

Arts Council England’s Environmental Responsibility Hub

ACE’s 2020-30 strategy, Let’s Create, embeds environmental responsibility as one of its four key investment principles. The Hub brings together all of the resources ACE has developed to help organisations embed the principles across their work.

Green Light: Programming for Environmental Responsibility

Designed to inspire and support people working in the cultural sector to embed environmental themes in their creative work. Access a summary of the programme, recordings and resources on how to embed environmental practices in artistic programming.

Green Screen

A practical online tool that supports environmentally friendly filming in London. The platform enables productions to set their own environmental targets, and provides an action plan to help achieve their goals.

A manifesto outlining the museum’s platform for action and the steps it will take to mitigate against the climate and ecological emergency.

The museum’s strategy sets out the part it will play in tackling the planetary emergency as a global, scientific and cultural institution.

Green Museums – Tackling the Climate Crisis

National Museum Directors’ Council has produced a guide demonstrating the many different ways that museums are responding to the climate emergency. Their report presents case studies from museums across three themes: research, public engagement and greening estates and operations.

Adopt approaches in the Theatre Green Book

The Theatre Green Book creates a common sustainability standard for the UK theatre sector – many of the approaches outlined in the book may translate to other cultural institutions. Arts Council England is in the process of developing a similar resource specific to the museum sector.

Music Declares Emergency is a group of artists, music industry professionals and organisations who have produced a great info pack for how the music industry can become more sustainable, whether you’re a business, artist or fan. 

Complete the ‘Home Survey Tool’ survey

In the Arts Green Book you can this responds to information insert information from your organisation to produce a preliminary sustainability plan which can be used to identify specific and sometimes small, inexpensive changes that can be made to your premises.

London's home for green innovation and advice, the programme is driven by the Mayor of London and offers free expert advice that educates, inspires and provides the tools needed to prepare your business for the future.

Sign up to the Mayor’s Business Climate Challenge (BCC)

The BCC is a programme which supports businesses to reduce their workplaces’ energy consumption, save on energy bills, and reduce carbon emissions. The programme offers free technical support to organisations, including those in the arts and culture sector, to operate their workplaces more efficiently.


Sign up to Museum Freecycle

A group for UK museums to exchange exhibition build items and other museum-specific materials for free in order to reduce the environmental footprint of the industry.
