Dementia Friendly Venues Charter
Culture is central to our city and the Dementia Friendly Venues Charter aims to make it accessible to all.
The Mayor of London has launched the world’s first Dementia Friendly Venues Charter for cultural public spaces in a drive to ensure that every Londoner with dementia and their carers has a dementia-friendly cultural venue on their doorstep.
It aims to transform cultural venues for people living with dementia and their carers through a range of dementia-friendly resources including inclusive performances, dedicated relaxed sessions, clear signage, designated chill out zones and staff training. Launching in Dementia Awareness Week, the Charter has been devised in collaboration with Alzheimer’s Society and the Museum of London.

Framework
We've worked with Alzheimer’s Society to produce a framework, which offers simple ideas, inspiration, information and resources to help organisations meet the standards of the Charter. It advises on possible courses of action, some changes that may need to be made and how organisations can upskill their staff.

Start your dementia-friendly journey
Venues based in London are invited to do an online self-accreditation via our dedicated portal. This includes a series of questions, with relevant resources, for venues to assess their dementia-friendly provision.
Some things venues can do to achieve accreditation:
- deliver Dementia-Friends Training sessions to all staff
- become a Dementia Champion in your organisation
- join your local Dementia Action Alliance
- offer relaxed performances or tours and a sensory map or a quiet area
- offer mobility aids, have ramps and lifts installed, have clear and readable signs and website
- involve those with lived experience in your work and at all levels.
Accredited venues get free access to an online course by Alzheimer’s Society to help them maintain and improve their dementia-friendly provision.
