Tower Hamlets and Hackney
The Hackney Wick and Fish Island Zone is a partnership between London Borough of Hackney, London Borough of Tower Hamlets and the London Legacy Development Corporation who have joined forces to protect one of the world’s most recognisable at risk communities of creators.
It is achieving this by bringing forward innovative pro-cultural policies and pioneering planning protections, helping maintain existing infrastructure, develop a pipeline of affordable workspace in the area and working hard to secure the long-term future of its cultural anchors.
Through the zone, the boroughs have developed a three-pronged offer to support residents in developing the skills sought by local creative employers. The zone also offers a range of high-quality careers programmes for local young people via the London Legacy Development Corporation funded Good Growth Hub. These include London Living Wage paid internships, support for freelancers, apprenticeships, careers advice and coaching. The zone is supporting the development of local freelancers with targeted business support programmes and increased opportunities for makers via new markets. Hackney Wick and Fish Island was the only zone to identify a community partner from the outset, bringing community and cultural organisations together to work towards common aims.
