The London Assembly today agreed a motion supporting the UK’s continued membership of the European Union.
After the first Mayor’s Question Time of the new Mayoral term, the Assembly agreed it should note the economic, security and environmental benefits of remaining within the European Union.
Len Duvall AM, who proposed the motion said:
“From protecting the rights of London’s workers, to tackling air pollution, membership of the EU brings so many benefits for our capital.
This is purely the tip of the iceberg. Of course we need a reformed EU, but Brexit won’t achieve the change we need. It will only rob Londoners of the many benefits that come from our participation.”
Sian Berry AM, who seconded the motion said:
“London needs to stay in the EU not only for environmental and wider economic reasons. Financial and good banking practice is also at risk. Leaving the EU could mean losing good regulations like the bankers’ bonus cap.
We also need to consider the value of EU citizens living in London, including our loved ones, friends and family. With 1 in 10 London couples involving a British national and someone from elsewhere in the EU, Brexit could force families into some tough decisions. Like the Mayor, I believe London needs to remain in the EU.”
Caroline Pidgeon MBE AM, who also seconded the motion said:
“There are many positive reasons for the UK remaining within the European Union.
Above all else the EU is vital for attracting investment and creating jobs. We should never forget that 40% of the world’s largest 250 companies have chosen London for their European or global headquarters and with half of them citing our EU membership as the core reason for investing in the capital.
However the benefits of the EU go much further, stretching from tackling London’s air pollution through to delivering lower mobile phone tariffs.”
