Mayor’s pollution plan – hot air or a breath of fresh air?

Traffic congestion - buses
Created on
12 July 2016

This meeting took place on 13 July 2016. Read the transcript here.

What do the experts make of the Mayor’s plans to tackle air pollution in London? The London Assembly Environment Committee will examine the range of measures suggested and the challenges involved in their introduction.

Should Euro 4 and 5 diesel cars and vans be exempt from the proposed £10 T-charge, when they have been shown to emit the same amount of NOX as older vehicles?

How will the additional charge affect individuals and businesses that currently use London’s roads?

What will TfL do with the revenue raised?

Guests will also be questioned on the following topics:

  • The implications of introducing the central ULEZ one year earlier in 2019 and extending it to the North and South Circular boundary in 2020
  • The impact of Brexit on the UK’s air pollution regulations
  • Mayoral proposals relying on Government co-operation
  • Clean bus corridors
  • Making Londoners more aware of air pollution episodes

The guests are:

  • Elliot Treharne, Air Quality Manager, GLA
  • Alex Williams, Acting Managing Director of Planning, TfL
  • Simon Alcock, Healthy Air London Co-ordinator, ClientEarth
