Summary of petition
We petition the Mayor and Transport for London to urgently implement safety measures on Bow Roundabout to create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
The roundabout is primarily designed for road traffic, it is a very busy crossing and there are regular instances of cars driving through red lights over pedestrian crossings. Overall the roundabout feels unsafe for pedestrian using it and road safety measures are urgently needed to communicate to drivers that the roundabout is also a pedestrian zone.
As new housing goes up and new schools open in the area more and more people cross the roundabout for access to transport, schools, shops and places of worship. It needs to feel safer for pedestrians, drivers and cyclists.
This is what we ask
- Signage indicating there are children crossing
- Fencing or planting around the edge of the central roundabout area that pedestrians cross
- Make cross walks more visible to prevent cars driving through
- Bring forward plans to create two bridges to connect Bow and Sugar House Island
- Create visual markings on the road to make it clearer to cars they are entering a new zone
- Introduce new lighting to make it brighter at night add planting on the roundabout and along the pedestrian walkways leading to the roundabout to help with ambiance, noise, air pollution
- Work with the local artist community to create a mural on the underside of the flyover
- Work with local schools to create murals for the pillars of the flyover
- Add floor art to the central zone to direct pedestrians towards the crossings.
