Developing teachers’ mathematics subject knowledge

The project to strengthen the mathematical subject knowledge and mathematical pedagogy knowledge of teachers so that they have a deep knowledge and understanding of mathematics and develop an appropriate range of high quality curriculum materials to improve confidence and attainment of all pupils. This was done by strengthening professional development through leading classroom based, peer-led collaboration within and between schools.

Findings showed that combining subject knowledge with task design and task presentation proved to be very effective. Both qualitative and quantitative data indicated that the project had positive impact on teachers, pupils, leadership teams and the wider school community. A conference was held to celebrate the successes of the project and to look forwards to an upscaled continuation of the project with a focus on leadership of primary mathematics.
