Housing Supplementary Planning Guidance (SPG)
What guidance does the SPG provide?
The Housing SPG was published in March 2016, following publication of the Further Alterations to the London Plan (FALP) and the Minor Alterations to the London Plan (MALP). It provides guidance on a range of strategic policies including housing supply, residential density, housing standards, build to rent developments, student accommodation and viability appraisals.
This SPG replaced the 2012 Housing SPG and the Mayor’s Housing Standards Policy Transition Statement.
Updates to the document
Since the publication of the Housing Design Standards LPG in June 2023, the Part 2 (Quality) chapter of the Housing SPG as been superseded by this document. Find more information on this LPG here.
The SPG was updated on 4th May 2016 to re-insert the Table on page 60 which provides a worked example of how to apply the density matrix to mixed use schemes. This has changed the numbering of all subsequent pages.
It was further updated in August 2017 to show the sections that are superseded by the publication of the Mayor's Affordable Housing and Viability SPG.
Public consultation
The Mayor published the Draft Interim Housing SPG for public consultation for a period of 12 weeks from 15 May 2015 – 7 August 2015. A summary of the main changes to the Housing SPG following this consultation is set out in the consultation summary, which can be downloaded below.
