Motion detail
Len Duvall AM proposed, and Joanne McCartney AM seconded, the following motion:
“This Assembly notes that the rise in National Insurance planned for April means an increase of 1.25 percentage points, which is a 10% rise in the amount people have to contribute. This will result in the lowest paid Londoners paying more.
This Assembly notes that the Chair of the Treasury Committee in the House of Commons has called for the increase to national insurance to be delayed supporting those struggling with the increased cost of living. However, the Prime Minister remains committed to the increase.
This Assembly joins the calls of Members of Parliament to the Chancellor to delay the proposed National Insurance hike amid the rising cost of living. This Assembly calls on the Chair of the Assembly to write to the Chancellor and ask him to reconsider the increase to National Insurance this April.”
Following debate and upon being put to the vote, the motion was agreed, with 14 votes being cast in favour and 8 votes being cast against.
