Motion detail
Dr Onkar Sahota AM proposed, and Unmesh Desai AM seconded the following motion:
“Londoners take pride in the diversity of their city.
The Assembly notes, with condemnation, comments from the Home Secretary, Suella Braverman, last month that multiculturalism 'has failed’ and that it undermines the stability and security of a society.
The Assembly disavows these statements in the strongest terms. Diversity in cultures, religions and perspectives adds to London’s identity. Multiculturalism gives London strength and does not pose risks to our city.
Giving asylum to those who are fleeing persecution is one of the UK’s strengths and should not be undermined. This Assembly is concerned that the Home Secretary’s comments could stoke division and blame minority communities for social problems.
The Assembly calls on the Government to:
• End the divisive rhetoric which can fuel racism and hatred towards those from other backgrounds.
The Assembly calls on the Mayor to:
• Outline to the Assembly the actions he is taking to ensure that London’s multicultural communities are respected and protected.
• Outline to the Assembly the actions he is taking to ensure that migrants are given the same opportunities to thrive as other Londoners.
• Outline to the Assembly the actions he is taking to support refugees and asylum seekers in London.”
Following debate and upon being put to the vote, the motion in the name of
Dr Onkar Sahota AM, was agreed unanimously.
