Motion detail
Marina Ahmad AM proposed, and Unmesh Desai AM seconded the following motion:
“This Assembly notes that inflation continues to increase and is expected to rise to at least 13% in October, with food prices rising faster than the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The UK is forecast to fall into recession this year, with the longest downturn since 2008 predicted.
The reality of this situation is that Londoners will have to make the difficult decision between heating and eating and will result in children going to school hungry.
This Assembly also notes that businesses, hospitals, and the voluntary sector are not subject to the energy cap and their bills will rise by up to 1000 per cent.
This Assembly is concerned at the impact on Londoners and is disappointed by the abject failure of the Government to address inflation over the summer, despite the warnings of a recession this autumn and the extortionate predicted energy prices. Instead, the Government was embroiled in a leadership contest in which the former Chancellor, The Rt Hon Rishi Sunak MP, bragged about taking money out of deprived areas to put into wealthy towns, and Liz Truss has toyed with the cutting public sector workers pay.
The Assembly therefore calls on the Chair of Assembly to write to the new Prime Minister to take urgent action.”
Following debate and upon being put to the vote, the motion in the name of Marina Ahmad AM was agreed, with 14 votes being cast in favour and 9 votes being cast against.
