ADD220 Business Case for an International Dementia Research Institute

Key information

Decision type: Assistant Director

Reference code: ADD220

Date signed:

Decision by: Amanda Coyle, Interim Assistant Director, Health and Communities

Executive summary

Dementia has been recognised by the G7 as one of the biggest global challenges of our time. The annual financial impact on the UK economy is £23bn. The GLA is championing a London based International Dementia Research Institute. The Institute will build on existing strengths in research and act as a facilitator for collaboration. To deliver this for London, Government backing must be secured with evidence provided from an independent expert in the business case for such a large investment. DD1217 stipulated that the recipient of the £50,000 grant to develop a business case would be UCL. This ADD proposes that the grant be made to MedCity as an independent expert. The change from UCL is to secure Government backing for the allocation of significant infrastructure funds as this will be done via competition and must not be biased to one potential host institution.
