Now in its 30th year, Black History Month is Britain’s biggest celebration of African and Caribbean communities - and there’s nowhere better to mark it than London. Here are five events not to miss this October:
1. Africa on the Square
Trafalgar Square springs to life with a day-long festival of African music, food and traditions. Dance along to Ghanaian Afrobeat group Yaaba Funk, sample jollof, plantains and sugarcane juice, and try out football kicks and drumming in our free workshops.

2. Soul of the Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power
In 1963 the civil rights movement hit its peak - and sparked an explosion of black art. This seminal exhibition tracks 20 years of radical creativity, celebrating figures including Martin Luther King, Angela Davis and Malcolm X.

3. Black Privilege: The Other Side
Author Colin Grant hosts two literary evenings with black British writers exploring the stories they choose to tell. With Afua Hirsch, Salena Godden, Chrystal Genesis, Karen McCarthy Woolf, Raymond Antrobus, Jay Bernard, and Rachel Chinouriri.

4. The Voice exhibition
A City Hall photo exhibition journeys through the pages of Britain’s first black newspaper, the Voice, as it captured the stories of African and Caribbean Londoners and marked key moments in London’s history .
6 to 31 October at City Hall. Free.
5. The Historical and Hidden Caribbean tours
Uncover the fascinating hidden stories that shaped the Caribbean on a Victoria and Albert Museum tour, taking you through six galleries, eight objects, and 300 years of history.
