Unveiling of the Millicent Fawcett statue

Millicent Fawcett statue

On 24 April the special statue was unveiled of suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett. Hers is the first monument to a woman ever to stand in the iconic Parliament Square, and the first there to be created by a woman, Turner Prize-winning artist Gillian Wearing OBE.

The Mayor attended with other guests including Caroline Criado Perez, whose petition to get the first statue of a woman in Parliament Square was signed by almost 85,000 people along with journalist Mishal Husain, Helen McCrory and poet Theresa Lola.

To mark the day of the statue unveiling, Google Arts & Culture is collaborating with its creator, the artist Gillian Wearing and the Mayor of London to show the spirit and stories of the suffrage campaigners on a new online platform.
