This report is about a crucial part of London’s transport system, the National Rail system, which falls beyond direct control of the Mayor. Perhaps as a consequence of this it is a subject on which the Mayor has said relatively little. London’s success depends on its commuter and long-distance rail services as much as any other transport system. Yet it is clear that these services are underachieving their potential in a number of ways. The report looks at some of those failings from a London perspective and recommends that the Assembly should keep the progress of the Mayor, Transport for London and other stakeholders involved under review, and that the Committee should hold a follow-up meeting in twelve months’ time.
