Biography

First elected in 2006, Sem has served as a councillor in London Borough of Hackney for over 8 years. She is the Mayoral Advisor for the Private Rented Sector and Affordability, leading on licensing and enforcement for the borough’s 34,000 privately rented household; campaigning for rent controls and supporting tenants and leaseholders affected by fire safety and cladding issues.

Before joining the Assembly, Sem was an account director at a leading public affairs and political communications agency. Sem’s professional experience included working with trade unions, supporting their campaigning and policy development on housing; parliamentary lobbying on equalities in the workplace (women, disabled people, Black workers); and self-employment. Sem has also worked with councils across England on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) and the implications of devolution.

Sem also has experience in the housing sector, working for a G15 housing association, as well as the youth and voluntary sectors; international development sector; and spearheading campaigns relating to housing.
