The Mayor’s Young Londoners Survey was published in 2009 when ICM surveyed over a thousand young Londoners aged 11 to 16. They were asked about a number of Mayoral policy areas, including - 2012 Games, environment, crime and safety, transport, education, culture, citizenship and involvement.

The results of the Young Londoners Survey were released on 17 September 2009 and painted a largely positive picture of young people’s lives in London. Compared to similar research in 2004, positive trends include:

  • More young Londoners feeling safe and happy in their neighbourhood
  • Valuing the "mix of people" as one of the best features of London
  • More taking part in sport, using libraries, homework clubs or other educational activities
  • More young people using London’s parks, open spaces and nature reserves
  • Feeling more able to influence decisions in their school and more likely to have taken part in a consultation

However, a number of key challenges were highlighted. The survey found that a significant number of young Londoners have fallen victim to crime. There are also issues with the lack of facilities such as youth clubs and also a lack of opportunities for young people to engage in their communities and influence decisions.
