Strategic Policing Requirement

In September 2013, HMIC inspected 18 forces as part of a three-year programme to examine the arrangements that forces have in place to meet the strategic policing requirement. In October 2014, HMIC published those reports.

Undercover Policing

In October 2014, HMIC published their inspection report into undercover policing. HMIC inspected all forces to understand the effectiveness of the arrangements in place to carry out, manage and scrutinise undercover operations.

Crime Data Integrity

In November 2014, HMIC published its final report of an inspection of crime data integrity in police forces in England and Wales. HMIC examined and assessed the integrity of crime data in each force, focusing on three broad themes: leadership and governance; systems and processes; and the people and skills involved.

Police Integrity and Corruption

In HMIC’s 2014/15 inspection programme, it committed to carry out an inspection of police integrity and leadership. In March 2014, the Home Secretary asked HMIC to look at the anti-corruption capability of forces as part of the inspection, including the ability of professional standards departments to gather regular, actionable, intelligence on corruption matters.

In November 2014, HMIC published its force reports which assessed the extent that forces have put in place arrangements to ensure its workforce acts with integrity.

Value for Money Profile

In October 2014, HMIC published a set of value for money profile reports which looked at how each force was performing compared to their most similar force grouping. The MPS report shows % variance compared with performance of Greater Manchester, West Midlands and West Yorkshire.

HMIC PEEL Assessment

PEEL is the programme in which HMIC draws together evidence from its annual all-force inspections. The evidence is used to assess the effectiveness, efficiency and legitimacy of the police. HMIC has introduced these assessments so that the public will be able to judge the performance of their force and policing as a whole.

Stop and Search Powers

This report sets out the findings of an inspection into the progress made by forces since HMIC’s 2013 report, Stop and Search Powers: Are the police using them effectively and fairly? It also addresses the Home Secretary’s new commission for HMIC to examine the way the police use powers to stop motor vehicles and strip search people.

Firearms Licensing

In May 2013, the Association of Chief Police Officers’ Firearms and Explosive Licensing Working Group invited HMIC to inspect firearms licensing. In July 2013, the Home Secretary gave approval for HMIC to examine how well police forces had responded to concerns raised about firearms licensing in previous reports on the subject. Their report - Targeting the Risk - sets out the findings from the inspection.

Forthcoming Inspections

Digital Policing

HMIC is intending to work with the Home Office, the College of Policing, academics and police forces to carry out a study to help build our understanding of the digital technology aspects of crime and policing.
