Why did you choose to employ apprentices?

Initially I was approached to recruit one to help me in my office. I then found out there was no apprenticeship in my Industry so I created one. This industry’s far too stale and apprentices are a great way of introducing people to real careers within our area of work.

What benefits has your apprenticeship programme brought to your business?

Our apprenticeship programme, and subsequently my ambassadorship with the National Apprenticeship Service, have been integral to the growth and success of my business. Their energy and enthusiasm is infectious and they bring a youthful eye to the workplace, keeping us up to date with current market trends, social networking, marketing and more. Our apprenticeships, and the success of our programme, have become one of our unique selling points!

Who are the apprentices that work for you?

I work with more specialised areas of young people. While I’m happy to take on any young people, I tend to work a lot with young offenders and young people from poor social backgrounds. The underdogs that no-one else will give a chance to, mostly. It’s all about transferring their survival skills from the streets to work. Every one that makes it through is why I do my job every day.

How does hiring and the day to day management of apprentices compare with other routes, such as graduate schemes or traineeships?

We have a continuous stream of candidates coming to us for apprenticeships, so recruiting is never a problem. We have referrals from local government, probation service, schools and many direct contacts each week.

Would you recommend apprentices to other businesses? If so, why?

I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend apprentices to other businesses. It’s something I believe in so much. There’s no better way to home grow your own talent. Some of my apprentices have been with me for years now, working as managers, consultants etc. Their knowledge and experience, which has been from ground level up, is invaluable.

What piece of advice would you give to employers who are considering hiring apprentices?

Just go for it.

Where are your apprentices now?

Our apprentices are all doing very well. Out of over 160, I‘ve only lost 11 back to re-offending in five years. Some have gone onto further education like university, some into permanent roles in our industry and some used their apprenticeship as a stepping stone into a different career. There are lots still with us; working as Operation Managers, Venue Supervisors, HR Consultants, and more. All our old apprentices mentor the new ones, as well.

Anything you’d like to add?

Every year I look forward to recruiting the new apprentices, seeing them start and then complete in a year’s time is a great feeling. You are alongside them into their first steps into adulthood and responsibilities, so guiding them right is imperative, as you will be giving them skills that will stick with them for life. Its takes time and patience to have apprentices, but like everything in life if you are committed then without a doubt it’s worth it.
