In July 2021 London was hit by two serious flash floods, just two weeks apart. Some areas of the city received more than twice the average monthly rainfall in just two hours. The floods caused massive disruption with homes and properties flooded by rainwater and sewage. Many rail and underground stations and several schools closed. Some hospital wards were evacuated. But the impacts could have been even more serious had the circumstances been only slightly different.

Following the flash floods, the Mayor convened a Roundtable of those organisations with responsibilities for managing flooding in London to make sure everything possible is being done to improve the response to and reduce the impacts of extreme rainfall events in our city.

This progress report sets out the actions to date that the Roundtable partners have delivered, or are in progress to improve London’s preparedness for flash flooding. The report also looks at the longer term plans that are now underway to ensure that London adapts and is ready for the impacts of climate change and future extreme rainfall events.
