I'm Yue Man, I volunteer as a Park Champion at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the Blossom Garden is the first event I’ve volunteered post lockdown.

Opening day

It was a privilege to be volunteering on the official Opening Day where we welcomed the people attending the ceremony. The event was so poignant and whilst volunteering it allowed me to reflect on the past year as well as assist others. After the past year, it felt really good to be part of a volunteer team again. I’ve missed the face to face contact and the chance to help visitors to enhance their experience.

Rewards of volunteering

I enjoy being part of a live historic event playing a small part in its success. It’s been incredibly rewarding meeting new people, building a rapport and working in a team. I’ve found volunteering interesting and fun with each shift unique. It’s incredibly rewarding learning new skills and gaining knowledge as well as increasing self-confidence. I feel volunteering now is more important than ever - to reconnect, build communities and smile again!

There are many volunteering opportunities so there is always something interesting and rewarding to do. It is inclusive so there is a role for everyone. The diverse mix of volunteers is what makes volunteering. I hope people know that you’re never too young or too old or inexperienced to carry out a role - support will always be given. I love volunteering, the friendships and the experience really make it worthwhile.
