Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has urged the Prime Minister to make sure residents have a strong voice in social housing decisions, especially in the aftermath of the Grenfell Tower fire.
He has proposed that the Prime Minister appoint a Commissioner for Social Housing Residents - to act as a watchdog and ensure residents have a say on social housing policies at a national level.
The Mayor is concerned that the current regulator - which oversees conditions in social housing - is not doing enough to make sure tenants are involved in decision-making.
Of more than a thousand complaints from residents to the regulator in the last two years, just 10 triggered regulatory action.
He wants City Hall and Government to consult residents and work together to develop key reforms that champion their needs and concerns.
I firmly believe residents must be at the heart of decision-making about the future of social housing. That’s why I am calling on the Prime Minister to work with me and residents to develop a package of measures that guarantee they have a much stronger voice.
