Hermine Kudia, the project manager behind Gold and Ashes, writes about the crowdfunded photobook, which tells the story of and honours the Grenfell Community.

On the 14 June 2017, a fire broke out in Grenfell Tower, and within minutes the fire climbed the exterior of the building and then spread to all four sides. By 03:00, most of the upper floors were alight. Seventy-two people died.

Gold & Ashes

Gold & Ashes is a photo series on the Grenfell Community created to honour the memories of those lost in Grenfell. Photographer Feruza Afewerki lost family members in the Grenfell fire four years ago, on this journey we see her photograph bereaved and survivors in the community, giving them an opportunity to reclaim the narrative and share their story.

The work asks us to focus on humanity, on love, on the bravery and fight of the community. It honours those who were lost and is an element of proof that those who were lost left an indelible mark on those they left behind.

The Exhibition and Photobook

The outdoor exhibition displays the portraits of the community members, each telling a story and commemorating the lives of those who passed. The exhibition is on until 31 August and based in Bramley Studio, Freston Road, W10 6SZ, and it open to all. The Gold & Ashes photobook will be released on 29 July 2021, all the proceed will be donated to mental health and wellbeing charities operating in the area and is now available to order on goldandashes.com
