Deputy Mayor launches Stay Safe Week for Older People

International day of older people
Created on
01 October 2018

To mark International Older People’s Day on October 1, Deputy Mayor Matthew Ryder launched Stay Safe Week for Older People at the Royal Chelsea Hospital.

Stay Safe Week for Older People is a new initiative, which is being launched by First Aid for Life and Fit for Safety in partnership with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) and Age UK national.

The aim of the week is to raise the profile of injury prevention and safe living for older people. This will become an annual national event aimed at signposting older people, their carers and professionals to the many resources available to help them remain fit and active, stay safe and understand what to do should something untoward happen.

The Mayor has recently published his Health Inequalities Strategy This sets out his aspiration for all Londoners to have the best opportunities to live a long life in good health and for their health not to suffer because of who they are, or where they live. Older people are a focus of many elements of this strategy, as one example, loneliness and the associated health risks can affect Londoners both young and old, but the experience is often more severe among older Londoners.

The Mayor and I are committed to making London a fairer and more inclusive city and that includes celebrating the significant contribution that older Londoners make to our capital. I am proud that London has signed up to the World Health Organisation’s global network of age-friendly cities and we are determined to help make London a dementia friendly city by 2020. Stay Safe supports our mission to make London a city where everyone can thrive and focuses our attention on improving the lives of older Londoners by providing support, interactive workshops and of course, Stay Safe Week.
