In early October, we gathered together at the Kiln Theatre to celebrate the achievements of Brent’s year as London Borough of Culture 2020, and look ahead to what culture can be and mean in Brent’s future.
It was emotional at times – some of the volunteers, young people, educators and artists had not seen each other for many months. Some had never met in real life, as Brent 2020 was delivered against the backdrop of a pandemic - a programme adapted to unite communities at a time when they were unable to come together.
We heard from Councillor Butt, Leader of Brent Council, about just how important culture is in the fabric of the borough, from Shonagh Manson, Assistant Director of the Mayor's Culture and Creative Industries team about the inspiration we can all take from Brent’s resilience and capacity to re-invent, and from Zerritha Brown, Legacy Manager for Brent 2020, about the depth of the legacy of this programme, to be built on for the years to come.
The highlight, though, was a panel discussion bringing together some of the key actors in Brent’s cultural journey: artists, teachers, young people and producers, making things happen on the ground.
