The overview

  • UK economy returns to growth in Q3 2019

Economic indicators

  • Continued but very weak growth in new business activity in London with the PMI New Business Index at 50.1 in October, down from 51.8 in September. An index reading above 50.0 indicates an increase in new orders from the previous month.
  • House price expectations continue to be negative with the RICS index at -2 for this month, up from -30 in September. London no longer has the most negative expectations for house prices of any region.
  • The consumer confidence index in London was 9 in October, down from 12 in September. This index has remained positive since March 2019. The GfK index of consumer confidence reflects people’s views on their financial position and the general economy over the past year and in the next 12 months. A score above zero suggests positive opinions; a score below zero indicates negative sentiment.

London's Economy Today supplement: Indices of Deprivation 2019

  • The Indices of Deprivation 2019 (ID2019) are the Government’s primary measure of deprivation for small areas (known as LSOAs) in England. They replace and update the Indices of Deprivation 2015.
  • They show that overall, London is less deprived, compared to other parts of the country according to IMD2019 than was the case in IMD2015.
  • The number of neighbourhoods (LSOAs) in London among the most deprived 5% in England is just eight out of a total of 4,835 LSOAs in London, or 0.2% of London’s LSOAs, and just 2% more (a further 99 LSOAs) are in England’s most deprived 10%.
