Free tap water with Refill London
Have you heard of Refill London? The scheme will help you locate places to refill your bottle with free tap water.
To help reduce the amount of single-use plastic bottles and make drinking water more accessible in public spaces, the Mayor has launched a scheme to help Londoners locate places to refill their bottles with free tap water.
The discussion ran from 15 March 2018 - 09 May 2018

Community Member 6 years agoI hadnt heard of this but it sounds like a great idea
Locally we have a tap available for dog walkers but you need a key to get in
It shouldnt be difficult design a secure robust tap?

Official Representative 6 years agoThanks everyone for your views. It's great to see such a positive response!
Do you think this Refill scheme has or will have an impact on your usage of single-use plastic water bottles? Why or why not?

Community Member 6 years agoGreat. Finally some action only after these plastic pollution. I lived in Zurich, Switzerland 34 years ago and there are drinking fountains easily accessible.

Community Member 6 years agoBrilliant idea - akin to the Community Toilet Scheme. Loving these simple, sensible ideas to reduce waste and build community. Just hope it spreads as much and as quickly as possible. How can citizens help move this along??

Everyone who works, lives and plays in London should have access to healthy hydration. Public water fountains are a key way of doing this, they provide visibility and accessibility to help make a #refillrevolution reality.
I agree with the earlier comment that single-use plastic bottled water costs unnecessary money (for individuals to buy and councils to clear up), causes massive environmental damage and will help tackle dehydration & obesity.
Having refill fountains at transport hubs would give millions of people every day access to water, regardless of age, ability, language, phone-technology, etc - and would be a lasting public legacy. www.waterforlondon.org are asking for this

The initiative needs to be rolled out quickly so that all Londoners are served and refill becomes the norm in London - then everyone will carry refillable bottles as they will know there will be a clear place to refill their bottle and not have to purchase single-use plastic which costs unnecessary money (for individuals & councils to clear up), causes massive environmental damage and will help tackle dehydration & obesity.
Good work so far but lets crack on with the rest of London!

Community Member 6 years agoWonderful idea. We now need to get the message across that water from taps is drinkable and stop people from purchasing so many plastic bottles of water !!

Community Member 6 years agoVery good idea. I remember drinking fountains and toilets, nowadays we are expected to pay for everything and the price they charge for bottled water in this country is extortionate. In Spain you can buy a bottle of water for 20p.

Community Member 6 years agoI hadn’t heard of this before, but I think it’s a great idea and I would like to see it come to Richmond and Kingston as soon as possible.

Community Member 6 years agoBrilliant way of cutting down on bottled plastic waste. Reduce is so much better than recycle particularly now Chia is sending our plastic back to us for incineration!

Community Member 6 years agoGreat idea. We need drinking fountains though - perhaps Costas can put one on an outside wall of all their shops.

Show full commentWhile this is a great scheme to implement quickly and with minimal cost. It would be great if residents, and visitors, of all ages and backgrounds could find water refill points at all of London transport stations; tube, bus, train, boat & tram, for the following reasons;
Not everyone has a smart phone, or data to use it while out and about if visiting from abroad
People need to know the app exists
Not everyone feels comfortable asking for water without buying something
The businesses can withdraw the offer of water at any time
Queuing to fill up water with other paying customers may be off putting
Asking for water requires a good grasp of English, excluding many tourists
Not all these businesses will be accessible to those with disabilities, for example wheelchair users or learning disabilities
The transport network is well known to residents and well used by tourists
It's great that Network Rail have announced they will be implementing water refill points at all of their stations. Starting with a trial at Charing Cross in the next few weeks. Hopefully this will be a template for the rest of the transport network.

Community Member 6 years agoAre there plans to have funding available for publicly-accessible areas to install water fountains?

Official Representative 6 years agoHi Chris
Yes there are. Have a look at this press release for more info: https://www.london.gov.uk/press-releases/mayoral/first-new-water-founta…
Where would you like to see more Refill points or water fountains? Will these have an impact on your usage of single-use plastic water bottles?
