Key information

Publication type: Current investigation

Publication date:

Serious youth violence can cause significant trauma in individuals and communities, and can impact young people’s development, making them more likely to be involved in the justice system in later life.

Trauma-informed approaches realise the effects that trauma can have on individuals and communities; recognise the signs and symptoms of trauma; and aim to prevent re-traumatisation.

The Health Committee has launched an investigation into trauma-informed approaches to youth violence.

This investigation will examine:

  • The rationale behind using trauma-informed approaches in supporting communities affected by youth violence, and how this approach is being utilised across London;
  • The impact of specific VRU initiatives that utilise trauma-informed approaches;
  • The involvement of the GLA Group Public Health Unit, and the extent to which the VRU is using a public health approach to serious youth violence and the use of trauma-informed approaches; and
  • The role that the NHS, local authorities and community organisations play in London in supporting communities through trauma-informed approaches.
