Preventing traffic jams

We are tackling the frustrating disruptions to traffic caused by jams.

Smoothing traffic flow

Smooth-flowing traffic helps all road users, including buses, cyclists and private vehicles. In general, traffic that is not endlessly stalled will also emit considerably less CO2.

Traffic lights

We are reviewing the operation of all of London’s 6,000 traffic lights to reduce delays for road users.

Motorcycles

Following the completion of two trials, motorcycles were given permanent access to bus lanes on the majority of the Capital's red routes from 23 January 2012.

A war on road works

We are working with utility companies to reduce the impact of their street works on traffic congestion. Initiatives like the London Permit Scheme and the Transport for London Lane Rental Scheme (TLRS) ’help to ensure works are better planned, coordinated and undertaken to reduce disruption. The Mayor’s Code of Conduct for Roadworks and Roadworks Pledge also set out the standards expected for works.
