Leading to a greener London

The Mayor's vision is for London to be recognised as a world leader in improving the environment locally and globally, by tackling climate change, improving the quality of the public realm, reducing pollution, developing a low carbon economy, consuming fewer resources and using resources more effectively.

Focusing on the challenges

In order to deliver this vision and to ensure London achieves the highest environmental standards and quality of life, we are focusing on three key challenges:

  • Improving quality of life for Londoners
  • Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions
  • Adapting London to the impact of irreversible climate change.

We will put tackling these challenges at the heart of all our work and will ensure that London develops sustainably, balancing environmental issues with social and economic ones to deliver improvements to the capital and for Londoners.

Taking bold steps

We are focusing on delivering real, on-the-ground change. We can, and have, set targets, but it is the action taken by all concerned to meet those targets that counts. Our actions are focused on large-scale, high-impact programmes.

We are working in local neighbourhoods, across London, nationally and internationally to tackle the challenges. We are keen to capitalise on the experience, expertise and commitment of everyone involved – from the 33 London local authorities to other public sector organisations, businesses and indeed each and every one of us in London. Our role is to bring out the best in everyone to help improve our environment.

By tackling the three key challenges we intend to achieve four outcomes:

  • Create a greener, cleaner, more resilient and civilised London.
  • Lead the way in energy efficiency, supply efficiency and renewable energy.
  • Turn London's waste into an opportunity.
  • Reduce the environmental impact of the way we travel.
