Space standards – the final frontier?

Housing design
Created on
05 December 2016

National space standards have only recently been adopted but reducing house sizes is being suggested as a solution to the housing crisis in the capital.

  • Where is the argument for reducing them coming from and why?
  • How prevalent is building under the space standards in London?
  • Does a smaller sized home mean accessibility is reduced?
  • Are smaller homes quicker and cheaper to build than other traditional builds?
  • Does building smaller make the Mayor’s aim of zero carbon more achievable?
  • How can the Mayor ensure that by promoting the building of smaller homes he is not risking worse overcrowding in future?

Tomorrow the London Assembly Housing Committee will consider the pros and cons of building smaller homes in London.

The Committee will hear from the following guests:

  • Nick Cuff, Land Director, Pocket Living
  • Toby Lloyd, Head of Housing Development, Shelter
  • Adam Challis, Head of Residential Research, JLL
  • Julia Park, Interim Chair of RIBA’s Housing Group

The meeting will take place on Tuesday 6 December from 10:00am in The Chamber (The Queen’s Walk, London SE1).

Media and members of the public are invited to attend and the meeting can also be viewed via webcast.
